by taking out a share of their wages to pay for room and board and even child support, if they have children? What do you think of making prison inmates “pay their own way” ?
It still would come out of the taxpayers pockets. Where do you think the money they make in prison come from? And in order for them to make enough to pay all this, they would need to get a very large pay raise. What do you think of making prison inmates “pay their own way” ?
They can do jobs in jail, but it normally pays like dime an hour. While paying their own way would maybe help a little bit (remember they earn like equal to a pack of cigs a week). But the problem i have is that they are working for sub going rates in general. Sure it allows them to get out and help society, but people are worried that we are giving jobs away to immigrants when we give away a bunch of jobs to inmates.
edit: the guy above me makes a very good point... but what is even more insane, is it costs more to put someone to death (like capital punishment) than it does to have them in jail for 80 years.
Who wouldn't hire an inmate that they have to pay 1 buck an hour instead of 10 bucks to a regular employee.
It would make sense to have them work in prison so they could learn a trade and help pay for some of the cost of running the facility. I think they do this in some states. I don't know if they are paid wages. I think that if it were widescale people would complain that it took away jobs from law abiding people. To do it after prison would make it even more difficult for them than it already is and would lead to further convictions.
I feel this is a good message to send to the inmates, and potential inmates. It also offsets the cost for the facility, and tax payers.
